The Best Is Yet To Come

LifeBook Memoirs Keep Your Fork

What is really important in life?

You may have read on your social media feed the trending story, “Keep Your Fork.” If you haven’t read the narration, all of us at LifeBook Memoirs  insist you do. The insightful tale gives you a hard look at what’s important in life and the idea that the best is yet to come.

In essence, the story details the wishes of a woman diagnosed with a terminal illness, given six months to live. She asks her pastor to come to her home to discuss her funeral wishes: what she’ll wear, the songs to be sung and the scriptures to be read.

But she adds, One more thing… when they bury me, I want my Bible in one hand and a fork in the other.

 Why? The pastor asks.

The woman explains that at the end of the main course of many socials she’s attended, someone would whisper to her, “keep your fork.” It was her favorite part of the meal because she knew something even better was to come like chocolate cake or another sweet treat.

So, she continued, her wish was that when people see her in the casket with a fork in hand they’ll wonder, “What’s with the fork?” the pastor will explain, “Keep your fork, because the best is yet to come.”

This story has been revised and shared but is the work of Roger William Thomas from the 1996 book, A 3rd Serving of Chicken Soup for the Soul.

An insightful tale of what we hope is to come, but also an important note on living now.

We all have full lives to live, with a hope that when our time comes, we can say that we’ve done everything we’ve wanted. Whatever your beliefs, many of us hope that life after our time on earth is one of peace and tranquility. You know, that the best is yet to come.

Living a life of love, success and joy is the ultimate dream. But preserving that life story is critical. Critical for you to remember as your years continue on and for your loved ones to never forget. We know this woman’s impactful words because someone knew to write it down.

But who will write yours?

So keep your fork. But share your story. You just never know when the best will come.
